McDowell Tops ULTIMATE Field at Rome Speedway

May 7th, 2017 - After Mother Nature ruined Friday night’s program, Shane McDowell Racing returned to Talladega Short Track (Eastaboga, Alabama) on Saturday night with both Dale McDowell and Ahnna Parkhurst in action. In a field of 32 cars for the Southern All Star Series sanctioned contest, McDowell registered the fastest time overall in qualifying earning him the 2nd-starting spot for the $4,000-to-win A-Main. After leading the first half of the race, McDowell slipped back to a 2nd late after trying to avoid lap-traffic. Hanging on to a podium spot, Dale landed a 2nd place finish behind Brandon Overton with Dallas Cooper, Cory Hedgecock, and Todd Morrow rounding out the Top 5.

During the same night competing in two divisions, Parkhurst timed in sixteenth fastest overall in a stout field of 52 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Models.  Passing two cars in her heat race, Parkhurst scored a 2nd place spot earning her 11th-startng spot for the A-Main. With $2,500 on the line, Ahnna slipped back to a 14th place outing. In the 602 ranks, Parkhurst improved two positions in her heat to place 2nd but was disqualified after the race when officials discovered an extra shock on her left rear. Slated to start on the tail of the feature, Ahnna decided to call it a night and prepare for Sunday.

On Sunday both Dale McDowell and Ahnna Parkhurst headed to Rome Speedway (Rome, Georgia). With 27 Super Late Models on hand for the ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series sanctioned program, McDowell timed in second fastest in his group behind Jason Welshan earning him the 4th-starting spot for the A-Main. Working his way into 2nd early, Dale paced his way through the race battling with Brandon Overton for the top spot. Using the lap traffic to his advantage late in the race, McDowell overtook Overton in the final two laps to pick up his second victory of the season over Overton, Donald McIntosh, Jonathan Davenport, and Michael Page. Dale was awarded a $4,000 payday for his triumph in the 40-lap A-Main. (Kevin Prater photo)

Running in only the Crate Late Model division on Sunday, Parkhurst timed in seventh fastest in qualifying positioning her on the fourth row for the feature. Moving up one spot in the A-Main, Ahnna reeled in a 6th place spot.
